As a by-product of collaborations, I realised I have a bunch of recordings on my laptop created during the research process for various pieces. I’ve had a few instances recently of people being surprised about some of these sounds (not expecting them to come out a bassoon). So I though I’d share some ‘highlights’ in a playlist below. If you are curious, give it a listen, put it on shuffle, let yourself be surprised, maybe you might find a sound you like! Bassoonists: if you want to try make similar sounds but don’t know where to start, drop me a message too!

First of all, if you need fingering charts, or would like to download the original files, just send me an email. I have a google drive with most of my recordings (way more than can fit in this playlist) with fingering charts, notes about what I’m doing whilst playing and so on, and I can share it with you.

I haven’t notated the pitch content of each sound, so if you want to know pitches and can’t identify them, just write me as well.

In general regarding notation - just write me, I can check again for you, make some more recordings, because in a lot of these sounds I’m exploring a spectrum, there’s a lot of processes happening at once.

If you want to sample these sounds, be my guest, just write me and I’ll send you them.

Now regarding the sounds: I grouped them by each project I did, shown with different photos, and some nicknames I gave each sound.

Dyads: high partials from strange fingerings, they are very pretty

‘Overtones’: generally speaking I am overblowing notes from the low register, opening the RH1 and LH1 (so pointing finger) of each hand a tiny bit.

‘Environments’: what I did here was go through every sort of ‘change’ I could think of on one single fingering, to demonstrate how flexible bassoon multiphonics can be.

‘Transformation’: I’m moving often only within one fingering, or between a couple - most of the change occurs due to air pressure, air speed, and embochure changes.

‘Exploration’: in these I stayed within one fingering.

‘Olivia_Elective’ etc.: these files are a bit different, I basically wanted to see what would happen when keys are opened and shut on the instrument, one key at a time - so it explores the transitions between each fingering. I have a big nasty excel sheet and audio folder with all the permutations… but I just put some highlights here!

‘Bisb’: bisbigliando. I added in a couple, as we say, for the craic!
